Are you a leader?

We all know the feeling you get when you achieve results that matter to you. A feeling of “yes!”, happiness, and satisfaction. Unfortunately, sometimes things do not happen as planned. How many times have you tried to initiate a new project or to change things that did not work out? We all have moments that we experience as failure. Perhaps you did not know how to start, or others did not accept your proposal. Perhaps you simply gave up yourself. Would you like to know how to make a difference? Did you know that the key is within you? It requires leadership. But what makes you a leader?

Leadership is about knowing yourself and self-development. During my own process I examined how I was communicating with others in conflicts. I was convinced I was right and the other person was wrong. It turned out that I was wrong. Thinking this way did not bring people together. If you really know what you are doing, you can make space in which something else can be created. For me, I was able to mentally connect to the other person. From that point on, I understood different opinions and found solutions that worked for both parties.

Learning to lead is about listening to your heart.It is about discovering what you care about and what you value. When you are clear about the principles of your life and what you are up to, it will drive your daily decisions. Your vision gives a point of reference to navigate the sometimes stormy seas of life.

Leadership is a matter of courage and commitment. Really knowing yourself will be uncomfortable at times. Development is about getting outside of your comfort zone.

Everyone can be a leader. Leaders are normal people just like you and me. And leaders can arise from any position in an organization or in personal life. They are people who have decided not to sit back, but to take responsibility to make a difference.

And what about you? Being a leader can be challenging. So why would you like to be one? Because it is fun to see the effect of your efforts, to follow the things that matter to you, to support others in their growth, and to achieve the goals you have set for yourself. I have some questions for you. They will give you more information about who you are. Please answer them honestly. Only facing the naked truth will make a difference.

  • What do you expect from leaders?
  • Where do you see opportunities? Where can you make a difference?
  • What will give you the courage to continue?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What are your values? What are your beliefs about people?
  • Do you do what you say? Can people rely on you?
  • What are you committed to?
  • What is your vision? How do you see the future of the organization?
